Paradise House in the Ochre City

By Francois | Young Couple

9.1

Our stay at Riad Due was exquisite.

We arrived early on a Sunday evening in Marrakech, with temperatures still in the low thirties. The riad as many others is tucked away a few metres from the busy small streets. A lovely old thick wooden door separates a quaint little alleyway from the paradise that we were about to discover. There is a delightful sense of tranquility and freshness as you walk into the riad, as the courteous staff escort you with your luggage. The gorgeous little plunge pool adds to the coolness of the place, and the delicate noises made by the dinky little fountain makes you instantly relax. We were asked to sit down, and delicious mint tea was on the table seconds later. A charming young man called Amine turned up and offered to rinse our hands with beaufitully scented Jasmine water, which is the sort of thing you just do not forget. The suite Amir is absolutely stunning. The bed is sort of suspended away from the ground on a wooden platform, and there is a fireplace on the other side of it. VERY comfortable indeed. There are some books to read there too. A fairly steep staircase takes you to the staggering bathroom where there are twin showers with these huge showerheads. All in marble should i add, and there is also a sunken marble bath tub adjacent to the shower area. 2 big bright deep ceramic sinks with chrome taps add to the luxury of the bathroom. The loo area with bidet is at the far end and is closed off by sliding doors. Plenty of space is provided in the shape of a wall mounted shelf next to the sinks where there is a hair dryer too. All in all one of the most impressive rooms we have ever stayed in.

The main "lobby" area has nice tables and is centered around the plunge pool, and there some comfortable chairs to match. At one end there is a sheltered area with a plush sofa and a heavy wood table where you can have your meals too. In the corner, there is an ipod dock and speakers for those of us who like to carry their music around. When you look up you can see that it is all open to the sky, but shade is provided by 3 huge strips of drapping that are hung across above the patio area at roof level to stop full invasion from the hot Marrakech sun.

It can get searingly hot on the roof terrace, but there is one shaded draped area around a small table with connecting lie outs around it - this is where you can have your evening meal, but beware that there is only the one table there, so book it in advance to avoid disappointment. There are "beach" towels available, and genuine double and single bed frames with comfy matresses to lie on. It is only a quick run down the stairs to the lovely fresh plunge pool. Please don't hesitate to do this, you never get the impression here that you are doing something that you are not supposed to do...

All the food is prepared under the supervision of a dear Morrrocan lady called Habiba, who makes anything from delicious home made pastries, bread and local pancakes, to some succulent Tagines. Breakfasts are fab. You can pretty much pick your location for your next meal, and even have it in the evening under the stars on the roof terrace which is so utterly romantic. They are really 2 main menus to choose from, one with salads, omelettes, Morroccan main courses etc..., and the other offers Italian food as the owner Giovanna is Italian. Everything we tasted was at least very good and several times superb. You can trust everything you eat in this gorgeous place as the hygiene is impeccable, and the ingredients very fresh and of 1st class quality.

The people were as much a reason to return there as anything else. The staff genuinely enjoys having you as guests, and they will do virtually anything to make your stay memorable. Riad Due hosts are perhaps the nicest and sweetest people we have ever met in the context of hospitality staff. So, indeed memorable and unforgettable it genuinely was.
